Little Smoke

  1. So what’s the current line-up of Little Smoke and who plays what in the band?

    The lineup is:

Sam Harris – Guitar & vocals

    Joel Boucher – Bass Guitar

    Adam Hockey – Drums

    Dan Luton – Percusion

  2. Being a Canberra based band is there much of a scene supporting the style of music and shows you guys play?

"Not really, it does seem to be getting better though. Places like The Pot Belly keep the local scene going and things like the Uni comp are well supported. We’re playing at Stonefest this year which is huge, so there are opportunities around.".

  3. Were you all in a high school band together or did the band form elsewhere?

"This year we decided to take things seriously and all moved in together to a house in Sutton to form Little Smoke. The pressures of the band were tough on relationships, so Mal left and Ad got a divorce! My stepbrother Joel, who was also living in Sutton, joined the band as the new bass player to replace Mal."

  4. How long ago did that all happen?

"The current lineup is about 6 months old but Little Smoke was launched at The Falls Festival over New Year."

  5. How did the band name Little Smoke come about?

"Not the big smoke. It’s related to coming from Sutton, which is definetely the little smoke."

  6. What style of music you would guys categorise yourselves into?

    "Folky rock pop?"

  7. What would your greatest achievement as a band to-date be?

"We organised an environmental festival out at Badja state forest to create awareness in the local community about the logging of Old Growth Forests. There was a truly awesome feeling that night, a huge electrical storm rolled in at the climax of the performance. Apart from that, the Falls Festival and winning the ACT finals of the campus band comp this month."

  8. What would some of the musical influences behind Little Smoke consist of?

"I had a very diverse musical upbringing, my Dad owned Impact Records and played in bands. The house was filled with music that no-one had ever heard of. Ad had a country music childhood which he rebelled against early, playing in thrash bands around Sydney. Jole’s youth and Dan’s enthusiasm brought a range of different influences to the band."

  9. Do you guys have any previous releases or future recording plans in sight?

"Space Is Dead released a CD almost 5 years ago. Since then, Little Smoke have done some demos and have a 6 track in the works. We’ve got heaps of songs that need to be recorded, we just need money to do it."

  10. Can you tell us a bit about the Jim Beam Xposed competition you guys have recently just won? What prizes did you score or what comes next from the comp?

"It was really good to see all the local student bands rockin’ at their hardest and it was really well supported. Competition doesn’t really seem fair though, when there was so much diversity amongst the bands, any one of which could have won. We’re flying off to Melbourne for the finals at The Corner Hotel on Thursday October 24."

  11. Can you tell us a bit about your slot on this years Falls Festival held over new years eve and the awesome bands you supported?

"APRA sponsered an extra stage and after hearing our demo they rang up and asked us to play! Ungkas, the firebreathing winners of last years Uni comp went off! It was also really good to see the John Butler Trio again."

  12. Did you go back stage with the rock stars and hang out with the likes of the hives, regurgitator and john butler trio?

"There was no way they’d let us backstage so we camped on the hill with the natives where the action was."

  13. What 3 bands would you like to play with in the future?

"John Butler Trio, Midnight Oil and Ben Harper."
