So what’s the current line-up of Polystigma and who plays what in the band?

Ok well theres me Jaime Fraser and I play guitar and am the lead singer. Kimb Galceran who plays bass and does backing vocals and Clinton Toepfer on the drums.

Where’s the band based?

Although we all live in different parts of the city, were pretty much based around Castle Hill (Sydney). We actually all live quite far away from each other but Castle Hill is sort of the central spot and its where we rehearse and stuff.

Were you all in a high school band together or did the band form elsewhere?

No, none of us went to the same school actually. I started the band when I was in year 7 with a schoolmate of mine. We were always trying to get our friends to join our band but no one ever would. Then after we had found a drummer we put an ad in the drum media for a bass player and kimb responded and it was love at first sight for us!!

How long ago was that?

Well we first started playing as a band in 1998. Since then weve had a rhythym guitarist leave, a drummer leave, a couple of fill-in drummers and now the lovely Clint.

How did the band name come about?

Well before I even had a band together I was always looking for cool band names. I was in an aquarium once and saw a fish called a Polystigma. I just thought it was a really cool word and decided that as soon as I got a band together that’s what it was gonna be called. But yeah a Polystigma is actually a fish. A little ugly one too. I think it comes from Africa or something.

Can you tell us a bit about your new EP the band has just released?

Ok well it’s a five song EP called "The Self Serve EP". We’re really happy with it. Its got a few songs that are kind of old and then one that I hadn’t even finished writing the lyrics to when we recorded it. There’s also some stuff on there that’s heavier than anything weve done before.

I hear Polystigma has recently gained a new drummer, how is he settling in?

So well!! He’s awesome. Such a good drummer and he just fits into the band so well. As soon as he walked into the audition I think Kimb and I just knew he was gonna be the right one. He’s a really awesome guy.

What style of music you would guys categorise yourselves into?

Ah that’s such a hard question to answer. See we never set out to be say a punk band or a metal band or a certain type of band. We just wanted to be a rock band. And play the music that we were writing. I guess also coz weve all got different music tastes it all just mushes up and makes what we play. But I guess were a kind of alternative/rock band. I don’t know.

What would your greatest achievement as a band to-date be?

Maybe getting the EP finished! That was a bit of an achievement! Um, playing Grounded was awesome and just playing with bands you really like and respect. Kimb and I also played in Ben Lees upcoming film clip as his band, and we’ve also played in Brisbane and stuff. But also just having someone like your music or buying your cd is really excellent. It gives you a nice warm fuzzy feeling.

What would some of the musical influences behind Polystigma consist of?

We all like pretty much the same thing but with a bit of differences. Kimb loves Smashing Pumpkins, At The Drive In, Fugazi, Sparta, Perfect Circle, ELO, Clint likes Sevendust, Foo Fighters, RHCP, Dream Theatre and I like Silverchair, Nirvana, Violent Femmes, System of a Down, The Beatles, Rage Against the Machine, Magic Dirt, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd. And Kimb and I are both really into Led Zeppelin, The Doors and then also really rad eighties music. We love stuff like Blondie, Devo, Simple Minds, I love the Bangles. HEAPS of stuff.

I read somewhere Polystigma was offered a recording contract from Michael Longs new label, (Jimmy Barnes, inxs…) Yet see that the band are releasing the new EP independently, was this an offer knocked back or put on hold?

Yeah we put it on hold for a while. Were really enjoying doing it independently at the moment. Having total control. But we’ll see what happens.

Polystigma has been on the Grounded Festival line up the last few years in a row, can we expect to see the band upon that line up again this year?

No, we loved doing the couple of Grounded festivals that we did, but this year were not doing it. But those sort of shows are so awesome for playing to the under age crowd. There definitely needs to be more all ages shows. Maybe next year.

What 3 bands have you played with in the past?

Three really awesome bands who weve played with have been Pre-Shrunk who are just mind blowing, Antiskeptic who are also awesome and The Drugs who just put on the best and funniest live performance.

What 3 bands would you like to play with in the future?

I think we’d all really like to play with Magic Dirt. That would the best. We’d love to play with Pre shrunk again and also Red Hot Chili Peppers. That might be quite nice thanks!!

What’s in store for Polystigma throughout this year?

A few tours maybe. Were going to be heading to Melbourne probably around May, we’d like to go back up to Brisbane again, last time we went there was awesome. Were hoping to maybe record an album toward the end of the next year. Yeah just build up our fan base, try to play to as many people as we can.

What was the last gig you went to?

Me and Kimb actually went and saw The Breeders last night at the Metro. That was pretty cool.

– C.D you got?

Hmmm, I think it was probably the new Queens of the Stone Age album.

Kimb’s was Zwan and Clint got the Bootleg’s of a Pearl Jam show he went to.

All time favourite disc?

That’s a hard one. Maybe Led Zeppelin 3. That’s always awesome no matter how many times you play it.

Where do you see the band in 12-18 months?

Maybe married with a few kids. (not)

Is there a website we can catch Polystigma on?

There sure is. "http://www.polystigma.com" On there you can join our mailing list or join out street team or buy the cd. And other things too.

O.K have you got any words to sum up Polystigma?

Jaime, Kimb and Clint.
