Slinkee Interview Slinkee Interview
Article By Kath on Jan 21, 2003

1) How long have Slinkee been together and whereabouts in Australia are you from?

All up we've been together for about a year and a half now and we all pretty much live in Melbourne, except Bonnie who lives in the bush somewhere.

2 ) Where does the name come from?

The 'idea' behind the band name came from Eddie Murphy's 'Delierious'.  Eddie talks about when he was a poor boy  from a poor family.  His Dad worked at the toy factory, and while other families brought home groceries for their dinner, his family would be forced to eat slinkees at the dinner table because it was the only thing they could scam for free!

There is a 'Slinkee' song that goes with this also, which got stuck in Lara's head when we were scratching for a band name, and that's how it came might hear the sample of this song on our website soon....stay tuned!

3) How did you guys all meet?

Lara, Christie and Steph all met through ads.  When Steph decided to take a holiday unplanned, Bonnie filled in on bass for us at the Empress and we were so impressed we kept her as our epic guitar player.  We did know her from around the traps before hand though.

4) What would be your 3 major musical influences?

Sleater-Kinney, Magic Dirt and Patti Smith.  Don't want to say too much except that everyone should own at least one CD by each of these bands!

5) What is one thing you'd like to change about the music industry?

More opportunity and recognition for the original and independent music scene, rather than for the false, money chasing corporate giants!!  A great article that is currently featured on our website talks alot about this stuff...feel free to check it out.

6) Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs time?

We want to share our music with everyone!  Hopefully playing to more people, here and overseas.  Hopefully by then we would have a few good releases under our belts.

7) What do you think makes a band stand out from all the others?

Music and performance that is inspired and that inspires us.  And it helps if they have a roomy door list

8) What CD releases have you had out? Any in the pipe-line?

Currently we have a five track EP/demo available at gigs, and we are in process of putting together our debut album which will hopefully be out mid 2003.

9) (Non music-related question) Buffy or Secret Life of Us?

Lara: Secret Life of Us...prefer Queer As Folk.  I really like the Buffy chess game.
Bonnie: Xena.
Steph: Kath and Kim is #1 for its poignant portrayal of young peoples hardship in modern day society.
Christie: I choose not to choose.

10) Final thoughts........(On your band, where you're headed, words of wisdom, etc....)

We once heard it's a long way to the top, and we're fast we cant say  Keep at it we guess, no matter wot!  If you have contacts...use em, if you have friends, invite them to shows all the time, and you will look sort of popular!
